Congress Greenlights Bill to Disclose Jeffrey Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday quickly approved to a bill that will mandate the disclosure of official records associated with the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a overwhelming vote in the lower house and a reversal by the president and his Republican allies. The administration changed course after an extended period of trying to delay the cross-party initiative involving a controversy that has plagued the president since his return to the White House.

Expedited Passage in Congress

Senators proceeded by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, speeding up the process. Just before, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a massive majority.

Citizens have been patient long enough. The survivors have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer declared in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before asking the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Reveal the truth. Let transparency reign.”

Presidential Signature

This legislation next heads to Donald Trump for his signature. The president indicated on Monday that he would endorse the legislation.

Although the president has for an extended period dismissed the outcry over the official management of the scandal as a “false narrative”, he signalled his support for the House bill over the past few days, and announced he would approve it if it reaches his desk.

Reaction

Democrats, along with victims and their advocates who were watching from a viewing area, applauded after the bill was passed. The only opposition came from a Louisiana Republican, who said he feared the measure would reveal specific data of witnesses, those under scrutiny and others involved in the investigation.
