Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Group

Since the launch of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a colorful mix of personalities, and a gripping narrative showcasing divine entities, evil spirits, and malevolent powers expanding in power within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Key plot points for Episode 3 of the new season are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

The third episode concluded with a dramatic pause and revealed the first table of adventurers who will separate from the primary party to begin their separate journey, distinct from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table includes Teor (portrayed by Travis), the agile character (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

Considering a large ensemble, it was obvious from the outset that keeping everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.

Hence, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, weaving together the characters’ stories before dividing into three smaller tables: Fighters, Schemers, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for players who prefer a traditionally charged fight-heavy gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are scarce.

At first glance, characters like the hesitant healer the cleric might seem unsuited, but the actions of episode 3 make it clear why these particular heroes are perfectly fit for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

First, the team has a clear idea where to head next after a intense first encounter with the enemy group.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose passing started the narrative’s action—manipulated the enemy for his own means, entering the hidden lair, assaulting the rogue, and stealing all the enchanted items to sell off.

Casimir then paid off his obligations and escaped to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the urban center, with Cyd pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each member has a personal reason to exit the metropolitan area:

  • The rogue, as the companion and trusted friend, seeks vengeance.
  • Kattigan knows the region and cautions that it is a hostile place.
  • The strong character and The healer, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to eliminate the fighter and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their status as key figures in House Halovar could help the team reach places they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, The fighter pledged a life debt to Wicander for his rescue and will now go with him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the rulers that rule the setting for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and The cleric turned against the powerful family and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • Teor is marked for death by the family.

This results in them no alternative but to journey toward the northern region in quest for the traitor.

Future Episodes

From the latest episode’s follow-up content, we find out that the Soldiers table won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight cast members to round up the Seekers and Strategists groups.

Viewers can expect learning which characters will be assigned to which table in the story’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on October 24.
