A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such medications must be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle support.
